Saree Care
Guide
A handwoven saree is a living fabric. Cared for properly, it will outlast trends, outlive seasons, and become an heirloom that speaks for generations.
The Golden Rule
When in doubt, hand wash gently in cold water and dry in the shade. This applies to almost every natural fibre.
Washing
- Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent.
- Never use bleach, fabric softeners or enzyme-based cleaners on natural fibres.
- For silk sarees, use a specialist silk wash or diluted baby shampoo.
- Gently squeeze — never wring or twist — to remove water.
- Test colourfastness on a small corner before the first wash.
Drying
- Dry in the shade. Direct sunlight will fade natural dyes and weaken fibre integrity.
- Lay flat or drape gently over a thick rod — never use thin wire hangers that can leave pressure marks.
- Avoid tumble drying entirely. The heat and mechanical action can cause irreversible shrinkage.
- Allow to dry completely before storing to prevent mildew.
Ironing
- Iron on a low-medium heat setting, inside out, while slightly damp.
- Use a pressing cloth (a thin cotton fabric) between the iron and the saree surface.
- For zari borders, place the saree face-down on a soft cloth and iron the reverse to protect the metal threads.
- Never iron silk directly — always use a pressing cloth or steam from a distance.
Storing
- Fold along the original grain lines and store in a cool, dry, ventilated space.
- Wrap in a clean muslin cloth (not plastic) to allow the fabric to breathe.
- For silk sarees, store with a sachet of dried neem leaves to deter insects naturally.
- Re-fold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks.
- Keep away from strong perfumes — fragrances can permanently alter natural dye tones.
